Replace a collapsed gas tank? Why? When you can use this trick.

Hi Bob. Thank you for your response re.: my Ford. Which reminds me of a 1973 Mercedes I bought in 1976. In winter, that car used to sit for months under some trees. The trees would drop their leaves all over the car. Then the snow will cover everything. All I did was to disconnect the battery. Anyhow, for some weird reason a vacuum tubing broke and sucked a leaf which plugged this vacuum tube. I noticed something was wrong when the gas tank would not fill up to the usual: it had shrunk. The dealer told me it would take weeks to get a new tank. Another mechanic ( for Mercedes ) told me "we do not do gas tanks". So, I bought a tire air pump. Like the ones you connect to the cig lighter. Looking for a place where to push air to the tank, found the leaves. Replaced several vacuum tubes. I ended up pushing air via the pipe that feeds gasoline to the carb until I heard the gas tank went back to the original size. Everything worked very well for the next 8 years. Sold the mb and bought a chevy. The pump still sits prominently in the garage. I hope this is not too long. best regards. henry. Back to the index page (top level)
